Volunteerism & Philanthropy
At Ionis, giving back is in our RNA. Our mantra is that sick people depend on us, and in much the same way, our communities depend on us too. We are proud of the work that we do to support and uplift our community as well as the many contributions made by our employees.
To support these efforts, Ionis provides up to two days per year of paid time off to volunteer for patient-focused 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, and we have a workplace giving platform that enables employees to learn about charities and easily donate to any 501(c)3 organization.

With our partners at Cure SMA, the annual ‘Surf Away SMA’ supports California local families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Our annual ‘Surf Away SMA’ supports California local families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA, and has become a celebratory day where families and friends reunite and make surfing a reality.
In August of 2020, we had a great time hosting the event virtually with Cure SMA and the SMA patient community, celebrating and honoring SMA Awareness Month. Watch the event:
ALS Association
At Ionis, we are driven to defeat ALS). We provide significant support to the ALS Association, Greater San Diego Chapter, in their efforts to serve, advocate for, and empower those affected by the disease.

At Ionis, we are driven to defeat ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). We provide significant support to the ALS Association, Greater San Diego Chapter, in their efforts to serve, advocate for, and empower those affected by ALS. We support the local chapter’s annual fundraiser, the ALS Fiesta, and, over the holiday season, our employees volunteer to produce gift baskets to every patient diagnosed with ALS in San Diego county. In 2020, we were honored to assemble and deliver these special gifts to 198 families battling ALS throughout San Diego.
Ionis’ Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led and focused on a particular dimension of diversity designed to support our business goals, diversify our leadership, build cultural awareness, and promote an inclusive and supportive culture. Ionis NEXT is one such ERG that engages middle and high school students with diverse backgrounds to educate, nurture, and mentor the next generation of leadership in life sciences.
